Amedeo Modigliani (July 12, 1884 – January 24, 1920) was an Italian painter and sculptor who worked mainly in France. He spent his youth in Italy studying ancient and Renaissance art before moving to Paris in 1906, where he joined the avant-garde circle of Pablo Picasso and Constantin Brâncuși. By 1912, he was exhibiting highly stylized sculptures alongside Cubists of the Section d'Or group at the Salon d'Automne. Famous for his modern portraits and nudes featuring a signature, surreal elongation of faces, necks, and figures. Unappreciated during his lifetime, his works later became amongst the most sought-after masterpieces in art history.
