An American painter who evolved from poetic landscape Tonalism to a vibrant form of Post-Impressionism. In his late career (post-1912), driven by his passion for collecting antiquities and Oriental art, he shifted to still lifes and portraits. These later works are celebrated for their rich, tapestry-like textures, bold pure colors, and the frequent inclusion of Persian ceramics or Asian textiles.
