The 18th century was the age of Enlightenment and brilliant courts, producing two opposing artistic impulses: the lightness and sensuality of Rococo, and the austerity of Neoclassicism inspired by antique ideals. It was the century of great portraitists — Gainsborough and Reynolds in England, Copley in America — and of David's revolutionary painting that heralded a new era.
