Die Freundinnen

Gustav Klimt
1916. Oil on canvas. 99 x 99 cm. The painting was destroyed in a fire in 1945..
A lost symbolist masterpiece by the renowned Austrian painter Gustav Klimt, alternatively known as The Friends or Girlfriends II. This work perfectly captures Klimt's late signature style, fusing delicate feminine portraiture with lush, decorative abstraction. Set against a vibrant pinkish-orange backdrop adorned with stylised birds and floral motifs, the composition creates an ethereal, dreamlike atmosphere. Belonging to the prestigious August and Serena Lederer collection, the canvas was tragically incinerated during the final weeks of World War II when Schloss Immendorf was destroyed by fire.
