Young Woman in a Black Hat (Jeune femme au chapeau noir)

Young Woman in a Black Hat (Jeune femme au chapeau noir)

Pierre-Auguste Renoir
1885. pastel. 38.5 × 26 cm. Palais des Beaux-Arts, Lille, France.

Executed during Renoir’s mid-1880s crisis of confidence in Impressionism, when he turned to linear discipline to structure his compositions. Pastel offered a faster execution medium than oil while maintaining control over physical contours. The sheet was created not as a preliminary study for a larger canvas, but as a fully finished graphic work intended for private art market sale.
