A supreme masterpiece of Byzantine Komnenian art and one of the most venerated sacred relics in Eastern Christianity. Belonging to the "Eleusa" (Tenderness) iconographic type, the Infant Christ presses His cheek against the Mother of God, gently embracing her. Her dark, melancholic gaze, looking past the child toward the viewer, foreshadows the Passion of Christ. Originally brought from Constantinople to Rus, the icon became a national spiritual symbol of protection, faith, and historical continuity.
