Two-year-old Henri Bertholet-Campan with his dog Aline

Adolf Ulrik Wertmüller
1786. Oil on canvas. 113.5 x 90.2 cm. Nationalmuseum, Stockholm, Sweden..

A portrait of Henri Bertholet-Campan (1784–1821), son of Henriette Campan (Madame Campan), first lady-in-waiting to Queen Marie Antoinette. Executed in France by Swedish court painter Wertmüller. Depicting the child in simple attire outdoors reflects the late 18th-century popularity of Jean-Jacques Rousseau's philosophy regarding natural childhood development.
