The model was Suzanne Valadon—a prominent artist's model who later became an accomplished painter herself and the mother of Maurice Utrillo. Posed in the traditional motif of an "Italian peasant girl", her smoothly rendered figure creates a deliberate visual tension with the loose, painterly foliage in the background.
