Fine Wind, Clear Morning (Gaifū kaisei)

Fine Wind, Clear Morning (Gaifū kaisei)

Katsushika Hokusai
1832. Color woodblock print (ukiyo-e). 25.7 × 38 cm. Multiple impressions.

A masterpiece from the Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji series that served as a major catalyst for European Japonisme (profoundly influencing Van Gogh, Monet, and Cézanne). Hokusai reduced the landscape to bold geometric abstraction. Technically, the print highlights the early use of imported Prussian blue ink alongside the bokashi (color gradation) hand-printing technique to capture a rare early-autumn atmospheric phenomenon at sunrise.
