1617. Oil on canvas. 187.3×94.5 cm cm. Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, Netherlands.

A monumental historical battle scene depicting a decisive naval clash during the Eighty Years' War. On April 25, 1607, the Dutch fleet launched a surprise attack on the Spanish fleet anchored in the Bay of Gibraltar, utterly destroying it. Although Admiral Jacob van Heemskerck was killed early in the action, the battle secured a historic victory for the Dutch Republic. The painting captures the dramatic clash of warships near the iconic Rock of Gibraltar alongside troops marching along the shoreline.
