Parisian Women in Algerian Dress (The Harem)
Pierre-Auguste Renoir
1872. Oil on canvas. 156 x 128.8 cm. The National Museum of Western Art, Tokyo, Japan.A direct homage to and reinterpretation of Eugène Delacroix's 1834 masterpiece Women of Algiers in Their Apartment. Submitted to the 1872 Paris Salon, the painting was rejected by the jury. It stands as the final major complex composition for which Lise Tréhot (seated center) modeled before her marriage. The canvas blends Romantic Orientalism with loose brushwork and complex light interactions, marking Renoir's progress toward mature Impressionism.
