Venus Anadyomene

Venus Anadyomene

Titian (Tiziano Vecellio)
1520. Oil on canvas. 75.8 × 57.6 cm. Scottish National Gallery, Edinburgh, UK.

A masterpiece from the early period of Venetian High Renaissance painter Titian. The title derives from the classical epithet of Aphrodite—"Anadyomene" ("rising from the sea"). The work depicts the goddess of love stepping out of the ocean while wringing seafoam from her hair. The composition exemplifies the 16th-century humanist ideal of classical beauty through supple anatomical modeling, subtle tonal transitions, and luminous glazing.
