Peaceable Kingdom

Peaceable Kingdom

Edward Hicks
1834. Oil on canvas. 74.5×90.1 cm cm. National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., USA.

A painting by American Quaker folk artist Edward Hicks from his celebrated series of over 60 variations on the "Peaceable Kingdom". The composition illustrates the biblical prophecy of Isaiah (Isaiah 11:6–9), depicting predatory and domestic animals resting peacefully alongside young children. In the background on the left, Hicks depicts William Penn's treaty with the Lenni Lenape, linking biblical prophecy with Quaker ideals in Pennsylvania history. The work is a representative piece of 19th-century American naive/folk art.
