Isabella and the Pot of Basil

Isabella and the Pot of Basil

William Holman Hunt
1867. Oil on canvas. 116 x187 cm. Laing Art Gallery.

Based on John Keats's poem Isabella, or the Pot of Basil (adapted from Giovanni Boccaccio's Decameron). The painting depicts Isabella leaning over a majolica pot containing the severed head of her murdered lover, Lorenzo, in which she has planted basil. The execution highlights exact Pre-Raphaelite rendering of interior furnishings, drapery, and decorative crafts.
