The cat at play

Henriëtte Ronner
1860. Oil on panel. 45.2×32.8 cm. Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, Netherlands.

A key work in 19th-century Dutch animalier painting. The 1860s marked a pivotal stylistic transition for Ronner-Knip, as she pivoted from depicting working dogs to specialized domestic pet genre scenes tailored for wealthy bourgeois interiors. Technique-wise, the wooden panel execution revives the 17th-century Dutch fijnschilder (fine-painter) methodology, meticulously rendering tactile surfaces of male leisure props—dominoes, a smoking cigar, and polished veneer—set in contrast to animal unpredictability.
